Coastal Landscapes
How Coastal Landscapes Inspire My Designs
At the edge, where the land meets the sea is where my creativity lives. There’s something magnetic about the coast. The salt in the air. The way time seems to soften everything it touches - driftwood, rocks, thoughts. It’s no wonder I return to it again and again for inspiration.
As you might have guessed my jewelry is deeply influenced by majestic coastal landscapes - not just in appearance but in energy. It’s not all about making seashells out of silver. It’s more about capturing that raw, weathered, windswept feeling that only the ocean can give.
Having had the good fortune of growing up sailing the New England coast aboard our boat the Chinook, a gorgeous Herreshoff built in 1916, the seed was planted for my deep love of the sea. Lying in my bunk while anchored off one of the magical remote islands I’d listen to the water lapping along the hull and wonder what stories this beautiful vessel held within it’s old wooden hull…I’d spend my days roaming the shore hunting for treasure, my kind of treasure bits and pieces of shells and things worn my time.
Organic Forms Softened by Time
Today on my long walks along the shoreline, I still collect treasures. The more worn and weathered the more delighted I am by the pitted surface of a rock, the fractured edge of a broken shell, the fluid lines carved by wind into sand.
These shapes, irregular & imperfect eventually find their way into my designs. I use lost-wax carving and other traditional metalsmithing techniques that echo these forms. No two pieces are ever identical, just like no two shells are ever the same.
Wabi-Sabi by the Sea
My work embraces imperfection. The ebb and flow of tidal treasures teaches that beautifully. Rusty chains, barnacle crusted pilings, weathered and worn rope; everything carries a story that only comes to light with time and exposure.
I strive to design jewelry that feels like it’s been shaped by these elements… the sea, sun and story. It’s why I favor textured surfaces, unpolished finishes, asymmetrical lines and the hand of the maker’s mark.
